Chemical engineering is an engineering discipline with the highest participation of women approximately at 35% as compared to 20% in engineering as a whole

Who is She?

She is an American chemical engineer who served as the administrator of the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) from 2009 to 2013. She went to both Tulane University and Princeton University, and after which she entered the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) as a staff-level engineer. She spent most of her career with EPA at the New York City regional office. In 2002, she joined the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection as the Assistant Commissioner of Compliance and Enforcement and Assistant Commissioner for Land Use Management. She was appointed as the state's Commissioner of Environmental Protection in 2006 and later briefly served as Corzine's Chief of Staff in late 2008. In the same year of 2008, President-elect Barack Obama nominated Jackson to serve as administrator of the Environmental Protection Agency, which made her the first African American to hold this position, As mentioned at the start, she was in position till 2013.

Her Impact:

During her tenure with EPA, she oversaw the development of stricter fuel efficiency standards and the EPA's response to the Deepwater Horizon oil spill; authorised the recognition of carbon dioxide as a public health threat, granting the EPA authority to set new regulations regarding CO2 emissions; and proposed amending the National Ambient Air Quality Standards to set stricter smog pollution limits. Which played a big role in protecting the earth from global warming.

She used her knowledge from chemical engineering to help with recent environmental issues which got her a job at Apple as its environmental director. She then oversees the environmental issues that the production of Apple products cause.

Her experience teaches us that a chemical engineer can use their knowledge about operation and designing of chemical plants as well as methods of improving production to help to play a part in solving some of the environmental issues that man-kind is facing today.
