Biochemistry is not a new concept to anyone, especially those interested in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (S.T.E.M.). However, several people may frequently ponder its application in the real world. So, how exactly is biochemistry used in everyday life?


There are three main sectors of life in which we apply biochemistry.

  • Medical Science and Treatment

  • Agriculture

  • Nutrition


Medical Science and Treatment

For several years, biochemistry has proven to be a huge form of assistance in the field of medical science. Some specifics under this category include Physiology (which is the chemistry and science of reactions involving the human body) and Pathology (which involves the science of changes and relates to diseases in the human body).


Biochemistry is also an essential component of medical treatment. Biochemistry has made it easier for doctors and nurses to perform diagnoses and provide appropriate treatment. The vast majority of these entail tests. Pregnancy tests, blood tests, kidney function tests, ames tests (salmonella), breast cancer tests, and cholesterol tests are some common examples. All of these tests involve looking for a specific element that is used to determine the health of a specific body part or the functioning of a body part.


Agriculture

In the agricultural field, biochemistry has aided farming, fishing, poultry, rearing, and other related activities. The primary goal of biochemistry is to aid crop growth and quality. This includes using fertilizers or insecticides to help the plant grow in the best conditions possible. Normally, the same method is used to obtain a high-quality crop.


Nutrition

Biochemistry also plays an important role in nutrition. Biochemistry aids in our understanding of chemical containment in food. This can be used to maintain our health by defining the optimum intake of all essential nutrients. The chemistry aspect of biochemistry is useful for food containment. Food storage and containment all depends on the type of food and how long it should be stored. With the assistance of biochemistry, we can pinpoint the conditions in which food can last for long periods.

Chemistry is also useful for allowing a human to intake the proper nutrients required for growth and sustenance. Biochemistry allows specific quantities of nutrients to be found, which allows proper guidance for a human to maintain their health. Using the concept of biochemistry, a physician can prescribe to limit the consumption of certain foods, such as excess sugar for diabetics, excess oil for heart and lung disease patients, and so on. We know that these carbohydrate and fat diets can slow the rate of recovery from the disorder.

We can also say that there is an overlap between nutrition and pharmaceuticals, considering that both pharmaceuticals and food items need to be stored, as well as prescribed in certain amounts to ensure efficiency.
